Fr. Charles Hart charlie hart

Fr. Charles Hart is a Franciscan friar and an ordained priest.  He is a native of Petoskey, Michigan and a veteran of the Merchant Marines and the US Army.  Fr. Hart holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Quincy University (1974) and a Masters of Divinity degree from Catholic Theological Union (1979).  After ordination in 1979 he served as an associate pastor in Quincy, Illinois for several years and then went to Houston, Texas to begin his CPE training.  His CPE supervisory education began in Houston in 1984 and was continued with the St. Louis Cluster from 1985-1987, and then completed in Memphis, Tennessee, where Fr. Hart supervised CPE programs and students from 1987 to 1994.  After that Fr. Hart worked for the Detroit Medical Center as a chaplain/supervisor from 1994 to 2004.  He was the CPE supervisor at Forest Park Hospital in St. Louis from 2004 to 2007.  After a sabbatical, Fr. Hart came to St. John’s Hospital in 2009 and re-established a hospital-based ACPE center in Springfield. 

Fr. Hart became a board certified chaplain with the National Association of Hospital Chaplains in 1987 and ministered for many years as a chaplain, supervisor, and administrator for Spiritual Care.  Though resigned from his chaplaincy certification, Fr. Hart is currently endorsed for hospital ministry and CPE supervision by his Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart and certified as a supervisor by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. of Decatur, Georgia.  He is also a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a Level II Design Human Engineer, and a clinical hypnotherapist.  He has had extensive experience in offering extended units of CPE that are very skill oriented and that help students to integrated life experiences and theological education into their understanding and practice of ministry.
